Online tools, Uses, and Web-Based Development

Search Engines & Web Navigation:
Search engines and web navigation are great tools for finding better information. Learning to use them properly can help me, as a student and my future students, with subject index searches, keyword searches, and advanced searches. It allows web users to hone in on resources for lesson planning, research papers, or annotated bibliographies.

Website Evaluation:
Website evaluation is so important! According to Roblyer, “The Internet’s vast information storehouse, unfortunately, contains some information that is incomplete, misleading, inaccurate, and/or out of date (2016, p.199).” Letting students run loose on the internet can be dangerous, it is always important to show a video, like the one below, to emphasize the importance of a safe and credible website. This video is kid friendly and shows students that if something is confusing, talk to an adult about it. It also teaches the students to check the latest update, relevence, content source and the websites ending.

Favorite Professional Websites:
According to Roblyer, “Information must be presented in an attractive, creative, yet readable way (2016, p. 199).”
Kids.gov - Is a great website for kids of all ages, it has links to history, jobs and careers, exercise and eating healthy and government. It is a great website to allow students to explore for any assignment. The content is up to date and the visual design is simple and manageable.
Raz-Kids.com - This website is for teachers to track students reading. It is a fun website that keeps students engaged and reading on level books at home. The websites graphics/ design is kid friendly and the sponsorship is clearly stated- meaning is it a credible resource.

Online Safety and Security:
Online safety and security is vital when allowing students to use the Internet. Cyberbullying has become overwhelmingly common today. According to Roblyer, “Several sites have been set up to document and combat this problem, but the first line of defense remains school-based programs to raise awareness among students of what constitutes cyberbullying and to teach how to respond if they observe or are victim of this online mistreatment (2016, p. 175).” This statement stands out to me because it is important for students to know how to combat a bully.

  1. I loved reading your blog post this week, Emily! I loved that you pointed out the importance of web navigation and search engines and the relevance of these tools to you and also your students. I agree 100% that search engines will make our job teaching easier in the aspect of lesson planning, but I can also agree that these tools help tremendously with assignments such as research paper.

The video you included is something that I feel students would benefit greatly from watching. As you said, it is potentially dangerous to let students search the web without educating them. As Roblyer, 2016 states, the internet is filled with things we may not want our students seeing due to inappropriateness for their age. Roblyer, 2016 goes on to say that because of this, it is imperative to teach students that websites that end in .gov or .edu are where they should be searching for information.

  2. I agree with what you had to say about online safety and security. We should be teaching in the classroom and schools that bullying is not tolerated, online and offline. There are some great educational sites that assist teachers on how to discuss the topic in the classroom. I agree with Roblyer, 2016 that states, "the first line of defense remains school-based programs to raise awareness among students of what constitutes cyberbullying and to teach how to respond if they observe or are victim of this online mistreatment."
I enjoyed reading your blog! Keep up the great work, friend!

  3. I love your points about cyberbullying. These days it seems as if some parents are very lenient with what their children look up and view on the internet. If the students get to school and begin to lookup the inappropriate sites or videos while at school, "The Children's Internet Protection Act, signed into law on December 21, 2000, is designed to ensure that libraries receiving federal e-rate funds take measures to keep children away from Internet materials that could be harmful to them" (page 174). If teachers were to teach the students Internet safety, the students wouldn't be tempted to use these sites at home.

  4. I talked about cyber bullying as well! It is such a hard subject to read about and hear about. Robyler in the book explained how horrible cyberbullying is and it is just as bad as bullying someone in person face to face! I love seeing your thoughts about this!!
